Are you the CEO of your life and do you get value from your daily performance?

What is a Cynic?

“A man who knows the price of everything and the value of nothing.” -Oscar Wilde

The hardest thing I do every day is to identify the value of my activities as a network marketer. As a business trainer, I showed people how to execute small processes to achieve the company’s business plan, measure results, and help identify best practices and personal adjustments to improve performance. As Sales Director I did the same, only I was responsible for the bigger budget, managing the costs, marketing and of course the “bean counters” and the CEO’s vision.

I’ve come to realize that there’s nothing else in network marketing except there’s no one to stop you from doing anything you want to do. Many industry leaders have told me that salespeople are the worst network marketers ever, and I finally get what they meant.

The role of a Network Marketer is the same as that of a CEO.

I was thinking of the role of a CEO. If you ask a CEO why they get so much money and I mean 50 times more than the company’s lowest paid employee, sometimes more; the answer is very revealing. From their point of view; it never has anything to do with their actual education, their successes and achievements or their ability to work hard. Their answer is because they can communicate their worth. The value of the company they represent and the future perceived value of how they can enhance any company’s strongest asset, its employees.

There are plenty of people who know themselves and what they stand for, just like a CEO.

A CEO is the person at the top of the corporate pyramid. A CEO seems to have some characteristics that may seem unusual compared to the other employees in the pyramid hierarchy of the company, but I find those characteristics are very common among many people in their daily lives. Successful CEOs make great leaders. I see great leaders every day; they are the mothers, fathers, community participants, softball coaches, scout leaders, deacons, and community watch participants.

The best CEOs have broad and diverse experience and work in a structured way to achieve goals for their organization. The best network marketers have diverse life experiences from everyday life. Do you pay your bills, keep your checkbook, schedule maintenance on your home and car, pay your taxes, save for school for kids, speak to teachers, analyze food labels, use a computer or smartphone, can you get along with your neighbours, do you help your family, schedule routines? You do a lot of a CEO’s job and don’t even realize it! Your experiences, decisions and responsibilities are more than the work you do every day, just like a CEO.

I want you to take away a clear thought after reading it that you can immediately apply. I want to stretch your mind’s eye to compare the role of a CEO to the value of what you do every day and how it relates to your network marketing opportunities.

What is a CEO?

A CEO is the “keeper of the vision”. A great CEO keeps the company on track to achieve that vision. The vision of the company is the most important guideline for the end goal of an organization. There will be many decisions and actions a CEO will have to make, and there will be decisions that temporarily satisfy a situation but will affect a company’s long-term vision. This is where the effective CEO steps in and ensures that the organization’s vision is on track. TIP: Replace the word family with companionship and reflect on the decisions, sacrifices, and actions you’ve made for your vision of your family.

A CEO is resourceful. They give more than they take every day. They don’t give up. If the wall is too high, they back off and find a way around it. Being resourceful is an asset to any organization. TIP: your organization is your family, how do you manage, shopping with a limited budget, driving the kids around, fitting everything into your day, coming up with solutions when you run out of money or time?

A CEO makes good decisions. Decisiveness is something a good CEO must possess. Without good decision-making ability, the chances of leading your organization to success are slim. TIP: What decisions do you make every day for the survival, safety and future of your family?

A CEO is brave. It takes courage to fire someone and it takes courage to sign a merger agreement. A CEO is courageous in taking action. TIP: Have you fired a plumber, contractor, babysitter, changed doctor, hired an insurance agent, lawyer, or realtor? Have you chosen a school, bought a car or anything else in everyday life that requires you to make decisions for what is best for your family?

A CEO has an eye for talent. A good CEO is able to spot the right people with the right personalities and put them in the right place. Retaining the right person for the right job exponentially increases an organization’s efficiency. If the wrong people are in positions of responsibility, they will perform poorly and underestimate their work. Hint: You should now get my hints.

Do you already have an “AHA” moment?

Let me ask you, what are you getting paid for? You know, at work, what do you get paid for? No matter how you answer that question, what you really get paid for is your TIME! Whether you’re running a process, a function, customer service or sales, you get paid for the time you put in and how the value of what you do is perceived by the organization you work for.

As a network marketer or CEO, you get paid for maintaining your vision, your resourcefulness, making good decisions, being courageous and having an eye for talent. Time is not related to your income, time is relative to how you learn to master the above as part of your lifestyle and how you incorporate it into your daily life experience. You really do, whether you realize it or not.

Your life goes on 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, you live and have experiences and perform the same skills as a CEO every day. As a network marketer, you earn an income living every day by doing exactly what you are doing in your life right now; pay attention and talk to people.

You talk to people. As a network marketer, you have a product or service that you believe in as passionately as a CEO believes in their company. You have an organization to build on and you do that by doing what a CEO does every day and what you do now anyway, just talking to people.

The only difference is this. Who pays you to tell everyone about the great restaurant you ate at last night? Who pays you to be excited about the current reality show you’re watching? Who are you paying to promote or market the new product you are trying to market? You do it every day though, bless your heart!

You are a promoter and accuser of all commercial items you experience. You also make many CEOs very happy. You do the work they want you to do for them and you do it for free! Well, actually the cost of getting you to do it is built into the product cost, so when you buy or pay; you are not only paying for the product, you are also paying for the cost to motivate you to promote it to everyone all the time!
