To reinstate your driver’s license in the state of Texas, the Texas Department of Public Safety (DPS) requires you to have SR22 Texas Insurance. The SR in SR22 stands for Safety Responsibility. SR22 Texas Insurance is required for high-risk drivers and must be retained for 2 years from the date of conviction in most cases. A $100 recovery fee must also be paid. Some reasons drivers may need SR22 Texas Insurance may include: involvement in a motor vehicle accident without proof of insurance, driving under the influence (DUI), driving while intoxicated (DWI), drug offenses, driving while license is invalid (DWLI), common misdemeanors , driving license restriction violation (VDLR). The state of Texas will suspend a driver’s license if a person has had 4 traffic violations within a 12-month period, or 7 traffic violations within a 24-month period.
SR22 Texas Insurance must cover at least the state’s minimum liability insurance limits, which are $30,000 for bodily injury per person, $60,000 for accidental bodily injury, and $25,000 for property damage. Once the policy is activated by the insurance company, the insurance company will notify the Texas Department of Public Safety that the driver meets the legal auto insurance requirements. A lapse of coverage will result in the auto insurance company notifying the state with an SR26 filing, which will result in another driver’s license suspension. If that happens, additional charges must be incurred and another SR22 filing must be triggered. Therefore, after taking out an SR22 Texas Insurance policy, it is important that the driver pays the premium on time to avoid the policy being terminated.
The Texas Department of Safety is located in Austin. An SR22 Texas Insurance form can be mailed or faxed to their office. It can also be brought in and submitted in person at the following 4 locations in the state: in Austin at 108 Denson Drive in Houston; 12220 South Gessner Drive in Garland; 350 West 1H30; or in Universal City at 1633 Pat Booker Road.
Because rates vary widely by carrier, it’s very important to shop around for SR22 insurance policies. Rates in Texas metropolitan areas are higher than rural rates. Expect to pay more if you live in Houston, San Antonio or Dallas as opposed to if you live in Waco or Tyler. Getting SR22 Texas Insurance and restoring your driver’s license will help you get back on the road legally.
