Auto repair is a fact of life. We live in a time where you can’t get anywhere without a set of wheels turning. One price we pay for that convenience is that car repair costs become part of every family’s budget. Unless you’re a real gearhead and have a full garage at your disposal, you’re going to need to put some money into repairs from time to time, but here are some tips to help you keep car repair costs down.
Check and change your oil
This is one of the biggest problems that is also one of the easiest to solve. Check your oil level every time you stop for fuel. It’s as easy as finding the dipstick, wiping it off, putting it back in, then checking the level. You should also get a periodic oil change. Driving with bad oil will cause all parts of your engine to rub against each other, causing friction and heat. This will wear out your engine in no time. You also have corrosion caused by the old oil that has been sitting in the pan forever.
Learn to shift smoothly
Driving a stick? If so, you need to perfect your smooth shifting technique. This is an art form, but it’s something anyone can learn and it will save you a lot of money on car repair. When you rev the engine, you put more stress on your clutch. Once the clutch fails, you have big bills for repairs. Each gear lever has a slightly different feel. Watch yours and make sure the gears don’t grind and the motor doesn’t rev. If so, take some time to practice and smooth it out.
Shift to neutral at red lights
Very few drivers usually do this, but shifting into neutral at red lights helps to significantly reduce the strain on your engine. It is especially important if you drive to work every day or take long car trips. Keeping your foot on the brake pedal while waiting at a traffic light puts pressure on the engine, causing it to wear out more quickly over time.
Don’t overload your system
It’s generally a good idea to use heaters, air conditioners, and defrosters only when you need them. Running the AC too high in the summer can cause your vehicle to overheat. Also using these your engine has to push harder and this puts pressure on it. It will also wear out your tires and reduce your fuel consumption.
Replace air filters regularly
Air filters get worn out and dirty, and this also puts unnecessary strain on your engine. Most people have these replaced at every service, but for most makes and models this is just not enough. Check your owner’s manual to see how often they recommend replacing air filters and make sure you do it. This is easy to fit into your regular maintenance routine.
Learning how to drive and take care of your vehicle can significantly reduce the cost of auto repair. You will sometimes need it, but follow these 5 tips and you can save a lot on the costs of keeping your car running.
