One person of old who was famous for his expertise as a locksmith was an Englishman named Robert Barron. He improved the security of the lock itself with the invention in 1778 of the double tumbler lock. There was no modern security, no digital technology to help him. He used the impressive skills of his mind and fingers to create his masterpiece of the time.
Another well-known locksmith was Jeremiah Chubb. He again patented a detector lock in 1818. This particular lock had six levers and earned him both a financial award and continued fame. Mr. Chubb was in London.
