Dental insurance is not always included in health insurance. Sometimes dental insurance comes under a health insurance plan, and sometimes it’s an entirely separate plan. Within a dental plan, you are usually allowed to have X-rays, cleanings and regular checkups. All of these are covered by your insurance plan and should be covered by any standard dental plan. Other plans offer more coverage, depending on what you choose. There are different types of dental plans, just like health insurance plans.
To determine whether your dental insurance is covered by your health insurance, it is best to check with your health insurer. Some health insurance companies offer standard dental care within their insurance plans. Standard care does not include visits to orthodontists, dental surgery, and other advanced methods of dental care. Consult your insurance plan or speak with your insurance company to find out specifically what is covered in your dental plan. Dental plans usually fall into two categories. The first is managed care. These plans usually include a network of dental providers. Dentists within these networks submit claims to your insurance company for you, reducing paperwork for you to complete. This category also comes with less cost which is out of pocket.
The other type of plan available for dental insurance within health insurance plans is reimbursement. This plan doesn’t offer dentists as many choices as a managed care plan. Your bill is also paid differently with this plan than with a managed care plan. An indemnity plan stipulates that you pay the bill in advance. After paying the bill, your insurance company will reimburse you for the services covered upon receipt of the bill. Depending on your personal circumstances and financial situation, this dental insurance may be more advantageous for you and for your health insurance.
For individuals who don’t want dental insurance, there’s another option that works well with your healthcare system. There are dental discounts and discount cards, which are not a real form of insurance. However, they offer you discounts for the services you receive in a dental office from a participating dentist. To use these cards along with your health insurance, you must pay the dentist directly when you visit the office. There is no waiting period for these cards and you and your close relatives can use the card.
